It's not like you can ever be certain a used bike hasn't been laid down so if you're going used you need to accept it's probably happened. It's pretty easy to lay a bike on the non-drive-side, with one pedal up, and then the only parts of the bike touching the ground will be tires, end of the pedal, and maybe the end of the bar. If you can't lean the rear wheel against a wall, this is how you lay the bike down safely.
