I used the take-up links on the 3 point hitch to adjust the height. Used the 350 today and no more problem with grass "bunching up" under the frame.

I think the No. 8 uses a pitman arm (wooden rod) to drive the sickle. The NH is belt driven as are the later JD mowers 50/250/350/450. Preference would be the belt driven.
